Swiss School

Notes:

  • The problem of the world changing is not an economic nor political issue, its a moral issue.
  • SUMAS is the first university in Europe that is based solely on sustainability.
  • SUMAS is the only university in Europe that offers the Bachelor and Master's degree in physics and administration.
  • It is located in the South-Western area of Switzerland, and it is a very safe place to be in.
  • Industry is a great factor that affects the change of the world, and the environment.
  • Nowadays there are environmental friendly products that take less to construct, and use less energy when in use.
  • By the year of 2050 if the world doesn't change then the earth will need twice the earth's surface to store all of the waste that is being produced.
  • The Eco label on products throughout Europe shows that it provides sustainability to the environment, and is better than regular products.
  • Many industries are attempting to ecologically change.
  • Temperature on earth as been increasing recently in the year.
  • The temperature changes have all occurred within the last decade with 2005 being the hottest year for now.
  • If the Arctic would somehow go away and meltdown, the sea level would rise by 26 feet.
Sustainable consumption in the cities:

In order to apply sustainable consumption to this city of Bogota, Colombia; harsh measures will need to be taken. Even on the roads there are pieces of trash lying around everywhere, and the fact that so many people buy products without even caring about what it will lead to in their planet; it is quite disappointing.

Bogota can take the measures of having Eco labeled products just like in Europe to raise more awareness within the consumers so that they can know that they are doing good for the environment. The best way to catch the attention of these consumers is possibly having recycling bins on the streets for different categories so that it can be reused. In shops and big malls, there can be certain corners within the shop that has all the regular products but with the Eco label sign which allows them to know that buying that product will be beneficial to the earth. There are also many more ways that sustainable consumption can be achieved by not consuming unnecessary products such as soda, candy, etc. The taste might be just as good, but the amount of products that it takes to produce one bar of chocolate, a bottle of soda can truly make a change once it has been continued for at least some time. Or, the local production companies can attempt to use the least amount of energy that they can, and use less materials that take a lot of waste. Companies can make a big change in this topic of sustainable consumption, but the people who can change the most are the consumers that actually buy these products.

Maybe in order to have this sustainable consumption, it might take many years and quite some effort by the consumers to make a big change. The companies might not be willing to make such a big change in how they produce their products, but it does require some convincing. This convincing might take some time, and sacrifices by the company to truly acquire the essence of what it feels like to be an "Eco city." Less cars must be used since they need fuel to function which costs money, and harms the environment with the bad air being produced by the cars. Bikes do not produce any sort of carbon dioxide, and don't take as much materials or energy to produce compared to cars. They might not be the fastest way of transportation  and not the safest; thus they are a great choice that one can take to help the environment. If the people of this city are willing to sacrifice many products that are bad for the environment, the city can have a big change in just a matter of years.

Overall, in order to make this city a sustainable city it is all up to the people that live within it. The choices that need to be made to change the city is all dependent on its citizens since the mayor can't be the only one riding a bicycle and buying Eco friendly products. It might make a very small change, but the bigger the better. So, if these actions happen to take place it can change the city greatly. Long Live Bogota!

  15. People brought desktops over to other peoples houses instead of laptops, etc.
Paragraphs:

What are the biggest benefits of being online, for you, personally?
The biggest benefits of being online is simplifying things that are hard to do in real life. Sometimes when you don't understand something you can look it up on the internet for easy and simple answers. When you try to write an essay, it can be quite tiring for you when you write each letter word by word; but you can always type it on Microsoft Word quickly and get it printed just like writing. Also, when you want to talk to your friends you don't have to pick up your phone and call or meet them personally, but you can just open one of your social media apps and contact them. Overall, it is very much easier to do things online rather than doing it in the real life with hardship.\

What topic in the video did you most strongly identify with and why?
The topic that I most strongly identify with is the things that can happen in the real life to what has happened online. I haven't really done much online that has affected my real life personally. Thus the time when I was hacked on Facebook and it started adding friends that I didn't even know in real life, it was very awkward to see the people personally. I don't know who in the world would hack my account when I didn't really expose myself to the internet, and I was hacked it was kind of confusing. As a conclusion towards what I have seen today on the movie was that I should never expose or reveal myself as someone different and just be myself when I can. Also, to never bring up things online in the real life.

What advice do you have to parents about kids being online?
To all the parents out there who care about their kids being online, they should try to relax about it. There is only a small chance that your child might be exposed to stalkers or pedophiles in the internet, and unless they openly or purposely reveal themselves it won't happen. Once your child opens up a Facebook, YouTube, or any type of account in a socially interacting website, you should try to regulate their use of it so that they don't get addicted to what they do. If your kid does happen to spend all of his time on the internet everyday, it could possibly lead to him being influenced to create a fake person in order to fit along with other people, etc. So, if you want to have your kid not be exposed to the troubles in the internet, try to regulate his time spent on anything that happens on the web,

GAFE

How do you create a blog? Creating a blog isn't all that hard. You have to take a series of steps in order to get you started up and ready to go on your blog.

  1. Go to Blogger and log in to your G Mail account if you have one. If not you can apply to sign up for a Google account.
  2. Once you log in, there will be a website with several different topics. Next to the topic of "Create your blog now," there will be a "New Blog" button which you should click in order to officially get started on your blog.
  3. Once you click the button, you will be able to insert your blog name, the address you want your blog to be, and the different templates that will decorate your blog.
  4. When you are done personalizing the blog, you can hit "Create blog" in order to have your blog made.
  5. After a brief delay of time, the blog will be created and added on to the website where you can click on view blog, edit blog, or START POSTING.
  6. Finally, you will be able to create your blog by typing anything inside the box when "Create a new post is clicked on." You can edit your writing by making it bold, adding pictures, etc.
Tags, Labels, Inserting things?

Label are a very useful tool in making your posts easy to locate on your blog. Once you add a certain label and keep posting blogs with that label, on your main page there will be a list on the right sight which when you click on will show you all the posts you wrote under a certain label. For example if you create 10 blogs with the label of "Kevin," you can click on the title of "Kevin" on the right side of the blog and the 10 blogs you have written will show up.
Inserting objects on blogger isn't as hard as you would imagine; insert a link by selecting a certain word then clicking on the Link button which will allow you to add the link which it will bring it to. Inserting a photo, and video are also easy since all you have to do is have the picture and video on your computer then you have to select in so that you can have it on your blog. Last and not least, adding a jump-break is the easiest process with you having to click the button itself to finish it, which is easy.

How do you customize your blog?

In order to customize your blog, you need to click on the "Design" button which can be located on the top right corner of your main blog page. Once you do, it will take you to another page where page with all sorts of settings, and once you click customize it will allow you to select your blog template and edit your title and all sorts of things that will seem fun to you and play around with.

Oh NO! I published a blog but I want to change something!

If you want to edit something on a blog you just posted, go to your blog's main page. Once you have arrived you will see the post you just made, and below it there will be a small white box and a pencil on it. If you click the pencil it will take you to the blog creation page where you can edit anything you with to. When you are done with what you meant to do, you can click on the "Update" button in order to have the edited version of the blog post on your blogger website. The old version will no longer exist, so you don't have to worry about anything.

I'm scared someone will stalk me on blogger! Help!

Blogger isn't a place where you don't have a privacy setting. If you are truly paranoid that someone will come and stalk your personal life if you happen to have a blog about personal life; you can add certain people to read your blog via the "My Blogs" page and "Settings." You can make it find-able or non-find-able by clicking the Yes or No button under the button of "Let search engines find your blog?" Everything else concerning who can read your blog, and what your blog post website will want to be made can all be edited on that page of Settings under the Basic topic.

I want to review my decisions once more and edit my whole blog. How do I do it?

Editing everything about your blog won't be so hard because all you have to do is repeat the same steps as the steps above where you want to change your privacy settings. Under the Settings topic there will be many others which you can select from in order to customize everything that you want to be changes in your blog.

Google Day #2

3 Goals for the Day:

  1. Research some colleges that have a reputation for graduating successful lawyers.
  2. Find out what AP courses are required to have a chance at becoming a lawyer.
  3. Go in-depth on what a Juris Doctorate Degree is.
Useful Links:

  • Top Law Schools: This website shows the best law schools within the U.S.A which can give me a brief idea on what kind of colleges with certain reputations will graduate successful lawyers. It even gives all the details of a certain university when you click on the name of the university.
  • How to become a lawyer: This website contains the basics of what kind of courses will help one's chance of becoming a well-known lawyer. It even provides "steps" that can provide some information and advice of "becoming" a good lawyer.
  • How to get a JD Degree: This website goes in-depth on what  Juris Doctorate really is, and gives you some instructions on how you can get one.
What I learnt:

Today I figured out that the college that my brother attends , University of Washington is 28th in the full time best law school rankings. Yet the best colleges that are existing today are Yale University, Harvard University, and Stanford University in the top 3 colleges with the best law schools. All of these colleges are quite over-rated, yet it does give a good advantage compared to other graduates from colleges that don't have a good reputation for graduating well-known lawyers. The colleges overall are exactly what I guessed, because of how they are all very famous colleges with many "successful" people graduating from these colleges.
Lawyers need to think critically, logically, and analytically. During high school, taking courses such as history, English, economics, communication, political science, and psychology can help one throughout their future in life. AP classes can also help because it will show a person what a college class is like, and count toward college credit to help one get a degree way faster. College classes overall are very rough and hard, and AP classes are basically set up to educate students on how hard college can be. Lawyers have to deal with a lot of critical and analytic thinking, so any classes that can help out with his in high school can be a very big benefit for the students that want to become lawyers. It will also give one a chance to see if they would like this type of work, and if in fact becoming a lawyer is a career that one would like to pursue and achieve in the future.
A JD degree is a Juris Doctorate Degree. Juris Doctorate degrees are first level, or basic, law degrees that law students receive after successfully completing the required course work. A JD program could be a full-time program, or a part-time program. Full-time programs are usually day division programs that last three years. In order to get  Juris Doctorate degree, one first needs to obtain a bachelor's degree. All law schools require that applicants first obtain a bachelor's degree. Next, one needs to create a profile with the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). The LSAC provides services to students that help streamline the process of applying to law school. Next, one needs to take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and one can register for it through the LSAC website. This test should be taken in the beginning of one's senior year of college so that one has the time to complete his/her law school applications by their respective deadlines. Finally, one needs to complete the law school curriculum, and it takes usually between 84 and 88 credit hours depending on the law school that one attends.
To summarize everything, becoming a lawyer and the goal of trying to become one shouldn't start after one graduates high school, but it should start once they go into their senior year. Becoming a lawyer isn't easy such as working at a McDonald's in Harlem, but it takes a lot of time and effort throughout the years that one has time to spend into their goal.

Next Google Day?:

Next Google day, I want to learn  the specifics of what the University of Washington has to be offer in their law program, and also for Yale, Harvard, and Stanford. To go in-depth on the SAT grades, and GPA, etc.

Google Day #1

Goals for the day, questions, and what skills I want to try/learn/perfect:
  • Learn how the law system in U.S.A, South Korea, etc. works.
  • Research which universities in America are well-known for graduating lawyers.
  • Figuring out what skills I need to be successful in law.
  1. How many years does it take to achieve a degree that allows one to become a lawyer?
  2. What kind of degree do you need to become a lawyer in U.S.A, South Korea, etc.?
  3. In what country do they pay lawyers the most?
I want to try and master the skills that I need to be successful in law, because when I apply to become a lawyer there will be many people that are competing against me; and having an advantage is always for the best. Not only do I want to master the skills I need to be successful in law, but I also want to try and learn the skills that are good for you when you attempt to win a case.

Helpful Links:

What I learned:

Becoming a lawyer in the U.S.A might be very challenging with all the competition that is going around the people. Even though you believe that you are prepared enough to be possibly accepted, there is always one person who is one step ahead of you. To become a lawyer in some U.S.A states is not that hard because you only need to take a bar exam, however many to-become-lawyers take a course so that they can have a JD (Juris Doctorate) Degree. Overall, it takes about 7 years to be granted the JD Degree because you need to get a Bachelor's degree first which takes 4 years, then the JD Degree takes 3 years.
The skills that one needs to be successful in law is learning how to cooperate in team work and people skills, communication and listening, research (analytically and problem-solving, ability to organize and priorities, self-motivation and initiative, and commercial awareness. Also, there are some myths that surround legal professionalism  You do not need to qualify as a solicitor to become a barrister, you do not have to study law to become a law, not all lawyers make a lot of money. So, there are many complicated areas where studying to become a lawyer can be quite confusing.
The countries that may the most for lawyers are actually quite out of the countries that I believed would pay the most. China pays the most towards lawyers with $146,954 as an annual salary, next comes Germany, France, U.A.E, and finally the U.S.A. In my opinion, becoming a lawyer in the U.S.A would be the best choice because of how I can speak English the best compared to other languages that I speak, and the other countries that pay higher than the U.S.A speak different languages mostly rather than English.
Some universities that are good when it comes to law are UCLA Law, Yale University Law, and University of Texas Law. Out of all these universities, the hardest one to get into would most likely be Yale University of law because of how much the competition might be, and UCLA Law might be quite hard to get into also. On the other hand the University of Texas Law might not be so complicated if I have a proper setup of a JD Degree, etc. Compared to students that want to become lawyers with only a bar exam grade, having a JD Degree will most likely increase my chances to get accepted compared to theirs.

One thing I want to learn next Google Day:

One thing I want to learn next Google Day is the average grades, and SAT scores that you need to have in order to be accepted to UCLA Law, Yale University Law, and University of Texas Law. These universities are regarded with great expectations, and knowing before-hand on what these universities want from their applicants would be best for me since I want to accepted to one of the top regarded Law based universities.

Linux

What you know about the topic before your search:

Honestly, I do not know so much about Linux up to this point; thus, the plane I road yesterday which was an Avianca plane had a Linux program inside their on-board tablets. From what I've heard from fellow students and what I know as pure knowledge on Linux, it is a group of operating systems. I've tested Linux before from what I remember a long time ago, and I even have one of their systems called "Ubuntu." The system itself is very well organized, yet it can sometimes confuse first time users which Linux can do a better job on fixing. Overall, there is not much that I know about Linux, and I hope to get to know many more things.

What you wonder or questions you have about the topic before researching (at least 2):

  1. How was Linux developed, and what was its purpose?
  2. What benefits can Linux bring for you when it is installed?
  3.  Who is the penguin on every Linux installed computer?

Links to where you found the most useful information (at least 2, NOT Wikipedia, although you can use it to help you):

  • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux (Only site containing information of the mascot itself.)
Bullet list of things you learned about the topic (at least 5):

  • Linux was developed as a free operating system for a specific group of computers that used to run on certain functions. Ever since then, Linux has been ported to even a larger group of computer hardware platforms than any other operating system that exists until now. It is the leading operating system on the servers and other big iron systems such as mainframe computers and supercomputers.
  • Besides being designed for general uses on desktops and servers, some programs have been specialized for different purposes such as computer architecture support, embedded systems, stability, security, and the list goes on and on. So, besides everything else; Linux can bring an easier experience to your online time.
  • Tux is the mascot that belongs to Linux, and it derived from a Linux logo competition. Even though Linux has other logos that are currently being put to use, Tux is the most commonly used icon. Tux is portrayed in many different styles with the different Linux distributions that has been released, and there are characters that link to Tux in some video games, etc.
  • Linux has other branching systems such as Ubuntu that have special benefits to the user.
  • Due to the low costs and ability to easily be customized, Linux is very frequently used in embedded systems. The most common devices that run on Linux are Android devices alongside some Nokia devices. Ever since the third quarter of the year 2010, 25.5% of the smartphones sold worldwide were running on Android which was powered by Linux. This shows how Linux takes a big role in the smartphone industry.
A short summary of how this topic connects/relates to you or your life:

Studying Linux can be a benefit to future studies where I might use programs in order to develop an operating system myself. Everything that someone studies can always be a benefit to them in the future or in the present, and getting to know more about Linux can higher the chances of someone studying more computer based education, and someone studying development, etc. For me personally, it won't help as much because I want to pursue my career as a lawyer or doctor now; yet if the opportunities for me to become so are low, then reaching towards technology might be a solution. Overall, it can connect and relate to my life in ways of my career in the future, and of gathering knowledge on technology currently.

Questions you still have (AT LEAST 1):

  1. Will Linux develop into an even stronger company in the future?

Design Project Day #5

1.
2.
3. (1): The biggest problem that we encountered was when Sam's taping skills weren't as good as expected, and the project almost tore itself apart. Thus, I applied duct tape unto the project that I kindly borrowed from my fellow students in order to make the project not fall apart like it did when the very weak and transparent tape was applied by Sam.
(2):  Our biggest "AH HA" moment was when Sam put a piece of cardboard under the two trap doors in order to make the usage of the game way more efficient than planned. Instead of having two spaces where we had to insert a slice of cardboard, we just placed a slice of cardboard beneath the trap doors.
(3): Jeffery was the one who resisted most ideas because he didn't do anything, except cut pieces of recycles paper and shape them into little balls. One more thing he did was write numbers on the crumpled papers, and he didn't contribute to anything else after he did so, and was messing around while stacking rolls of tape on top of each other. Sam, on the other hand also resisted the idea of letting me work on the computer because he was working on it for quite some time while I was taping the rest of the project together; and he said "NO." Sam and Jeffery were being very out of task because we could have worked all together, yet he was being very out of task by switching from task to task while being negative about everything because he was personally stressed. Sam doesn't show any kind of determination to work with his easy distraction to other things that are happening around him, and he has to always do the good things in the project in order to look for a good grade on his project. I think that the main part of getting a good grade is by sticking to the task you need to do, instead of being drifted away with something else that is totally going to dist rub the working essence of our class time that we could have used in order to finish the project. Due to Sam's actions of not cooperating with the group, and due to Jeffery not doing anything after working for 5 minutes, we were not able to finish the project because of these two students being very distracted.
(4): Some doubts of the project we had were when we thought we couldn't finish the project in time with the limited amount of time that we had. However, we all decided to work together at one point which was the last second before we had to bring the project, so that we could bring the project to the children in order to allow them to have fun with their fellow students.
(5):  In my opinion no one was the Devil's advocate because no one questioned anything because we had no other choice but to listen to each other so that we could have time to work together. The process wasn't really good, because we had no Devil's advocate that tried to correct everyone, so we all made little mistakes towards each other which made our working group not so good.
(6): About my self I learned that I had a problem in trying to do everything perfectly, and the teamwork wasn't so good with everyone doing their own thing by themselves which made the amount of time we spent together very little. The design process was very well organized so we had an idea on what we were going to do during the time we had in order to finish the project, yet when we actually went into constructing our project, we had a very hard time doing so.

Community Service

Community service could be regarded as one of the most exciting experiences that I had in a very long time. Each day we had to go on a two hour drive towards the south to go to a foundation of Carulla, aeioTu. By the time we arrived, we all went into the gates of the school where a woman greeted us into their school. Many children could be seen playing on the fields, and children eating inside the cafeteria looked like they were enjoying themselves everyday.

On the first day I arrived there, I had to work with documents for the children with two new students I met; Carlos and Gabriela. We had to spend 3 hours each day as we organized files that belonged to children who were recently accepted into the school. The following days were also days in which I had to work with some other students to organize files for an entire 3 hours; it really wasn't much fun. Thursday, was the time of freedom with me being separated from the documenting group to join the "in-class," activity time with my good friend Eric. I even met some news employees from aeioTu who wanted to go to South Korea for some weird reason, and I swear that I heard the word "comida." However, the most exciting day for me was Friday in which I helped a kid go to the bathroom to take a number 2, and even freed a kid who was trapped inside a bathroom stall. I even had to go into a room full of kids with a teacher who spoke little English to spend the whole day with them. I had to help kids wash their hands before they went to the cafeteria to eat a few sausages and drink some milk, and then I had to help them brush their teeth by putting toothpaste on everyone's toothpaste, and I even had to set up a screen for the children to watch a movie.

The overall experience at the school was very fun and exciting to be honest to meet new children which I could play with. Also, the fact that I met new students which I became friends with was very nice because it never hurts to not know someone.

Design Project-Day 3

TO DO DAY 3

1. The game matches the group that we have planned it to be for because of how simple and easy it is to play the game and conduct it myself. The game gives points and also gives tickets because of how they are needed in order for the kids to earn prizes that they can receive by catching tickets that fall from above which have certain numbers on them which define how many points that the kids can obtain. Also, the tickets have negative numbers with positive numbers which makes it more challenging for the kids to obtain certain scores to get prizes that they need. Overall, I believe that the idea is being very well made, and will be a big hit towards the kids that will play it.

2. Some powerful ideas in the model that we want to keep is the sliding holder that holds the two flaps together that will release the tickets. Also, we want to keep the numbers tickets that contain positive and negative numbers so it can be more exciting for the students. Another aspect we want to keep about the model is how the model is looking physically because the model should be adjusted to the height and size of the children so it won't be uncomfortable for anyone that uses it. The tray idea on the bottom can also be kept since it makes it efficient to remove the tickets from the bottom to place them back on the top, above the flaps. In conclusion, all the aspects of the model could be kept, but the final product should just be longer.

3. Factors that we can remove to simplify the game are nothing. The game is very simple and the model has the aspects of a game that is needed for efficiency and simplicity.

Building Plan:

1. In order to build the actual model, we must go through these steps.

  •  Cut up the large cardboard and separate them into 3 sides so they can be folded into a box with a missing side.
  • Cut up another cardboard so that the floor can be covered for a tray to be placed.
  • Cut a piece of cardboard and cut it in half to be made into the flaps for the tickets to fall through.
  • Cut two pieces that look like rectangles and make a stick to hold the flaps together.
Sam does the cutting, and Yootaek does the folding, and Jeffrey makes the balls.

Design Project - Day 1

Yootaek Oh
Sam Thomas
Jeff Habbegger

Define Phase:

1.  The game will be focused on the age groups of elementary school students, and for both genders to play.
2. The difficulty of the game will be easy as it is focused towards the children.
3. A game will be made successful if it has levels, gives points, if it requires luck, has a teaser, and gives tickets that can be redeemed for prizes.
Research Phase:
1. Sammy's Game: This game was very simple and understandable which made it easy for new customers to understand how it would work, and it had a little challenge to it with the blockers at both sides of the goal. In my opinion the game could be added with another level after the level where he throws the ball inside goal so it could have a little bit more of a challenge.
2. Caine's Labryinth: In my opinion the game was a very original game because of how it could be controlled by the normal hand when many games like these are usually made on mechanical gadgets as apps. The game could be improved by perhaps making the labryinth itself a bit clean so people can actually see the difference in the maze because currently it is made out of different boxes which make it hard for some to view the labryinth from different angles.
3. Caine's Ticket Grab: The game was a very creative game in a way because it was literally a tight space where the customers could have all the fun and excitement that they needed. Overall it was a very good game but can be improved in many ways by perhaps tightening the door so the tickets wouldn't fly out of the little booth, yet everything is very creative in many ways which makes it a good game generally.
Ideation Phase:
Paper Rain

Ideas:
  • Very Convenient and easy to use. It has different paper balls with different numbers on them that can be counted at the end of the game to be redeemed as prizes.
  • Players stand on top of a bucket that will hold all the tickets and make it easier for them to put the tickets back on top of the booth.
Negative:
  • The game could go wrong with children being different sizes. The Paper Rain Booth can be made considering the size of even big children for them to fit.
  • The game might be too easy for children to play due to the size of paper balls. The balls can be made in various sizes so the game can go from easier to harder.
